Ted Estes is a software engineer and game developer known for his contributions to pinball during the 1990s at Williams Electronic Games. As a lead programmer, he played a key role in developing iconic machines like Twilight Zone, Demolition Man, and Red & Ted’s Road Show, introducing deep rule sets, advanced multi-ball features, and innovative playfield mechanics. Estes also helped refine the Williams Pinball Controller (WPC) system, enabling more sophisticated lighting, sound, and interactive elements that set new industry standards. His work emphasized both player engagement and operator-friendly features, such as improved diagnostics and new credit buy-in options.
Beyond programming, Estes became a software manager at Williams, guiding development teams during a period of industry change. When Williams ended its pinball operations in 1999, he transitioned to slot machine software and later co-founded Spooky Cool Labs, where he worked on digital pinball projects. In the 2010s, Estes joined Jersey Jack Pinball, contributing to modern machines like The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, bringing his expertise in rule design and software systems to a new generation of pinball machines. His impact on pinball is seen in both the classic machines he helped create and the evolution of pinball software and gameplay mechanics in the decades that followed.
