Stern Launches King Kong: Myth of Terror Island

Keith Elwin’s tables have been viewed as Stern’s cornerstone releases for a majority of the 2020s, with Godzilla commonly being viewed as one of the best pinball machines ever made and Jaws receiving a similarly massive following as its code evolved. Elwin’s tables specialize in taking players on epic, massive adventures comparable to those depicted in the source material and take inspiration from a wide variety of sources, including overlooked Data East & Gottlieb tables from the 1990s. His desire to bring players unique experiences lives on with the announcement of Stern’s latest title, King Kong: Myth of Terror Island.

King Kong is an evergreen franchise whose most recent film exposure has been the Skull Island film series and appearances in Legendary’s MonsterVerse series. This isn’t the giant ape’s first pinball – a prototype was released by Data East in 1990 that was scrapped due to high production costs – but this is his first officially released pinball machine!

King Kong Pricing and Availability

Pricing for this machine will remain the same as it has been for Stern’s past few machines: $6999 for the Pro, $9699, and $12999 for the LE. Only 932 LE models will be produced in commemoration of the original King Kong novel being published in 1932.

Some of these can only be found on Prem / LE models of the machine. They will be marked accordingly.

King Kong Sculpt (Prem / LE)

In the back right of the game is an advanced animatronic of King Kong with moving arms that can stop the ball when it exits the center ramp and animates during play.  The sculpt is static on the Pro model.

Train Sculpt (Prem / LE)

Lock balls into the train to start King Kong multiball. Kong will flip over the train when multiball starts and send balls flying to the upper flipper. This sculpt is a static plastic on the Pro model.

Kicker Target

A hidden kicker target is located below the King Kong sculpt, which can either send balls that hit it out of the loop used to hit it or into a hidden sinkhole that feeds the right flipper.

Giant Spider Sculpt

One of Terror Island’s denizens is located above a 3-bank of standup targets and a magnet that catches and throws the ball. The spider reacts to hits to its targets.

Gong Target (Prem / LE)

The gong target interacts with the ball when hit and hides a scoop that is used to start island scenes. It is located to the center-right of the playfield in front of the Kong sculpt.

• The Story: The story begins as Ann Darrow, Jack Driscoll, and Carl Denham arrive on the mysterious Terror Island. The group, each with their own motivations, is there to uncover the island’s secrets. Denham, the ambitious filmmaker, aims to capture King Kong, the legendary beast that roams the island, while Jack and Ann are more concerned with uncovering the island’s mystical riches.
• Climb Feature: Shoot CLIMB arrows to ascend the building to collect awards.
• King Kong Multiball Feature: DROP targets light Kong Lock. Lock 3 balls for KING KONG MULTIBALL.
• Biplane Attack Feature: Shoot BIPLANE ramp to begin BIPLANE ATTACK.
• Island Scenes: Shoot GONG to begin ISLAND SCENE.
• T-Rex Battle: Collect KING KONG letters to light T-REX BATTLE.
• Spider Pit: Shoot THE PIT to battle the pit creatures.
