About Allied Leisure Industries Inc.

Allied Leisure Industries Inc. was an American coin-operated game manufacturer founded in late 1968 by Ron Haliburton and David Braun in Florida. Initially producing novelty amusements, the company pivoted to pinball in the early 1970s and set up facilities in Hialeah to pursue in-house design and production. Early offerings like Sea Hunt and Spooksville (both 1972) introduced a novel upright “shakerball” concept, allowing players to tilt the entire playfield without triggering a standard tilt mechanism. Though these machines drew attention for their unconventional cabinets, mechanical complexity hampered commercial success and prompted Allied to refocus on more traditional designs. In 1975, the company released Rock On, recognized as one of the earliest solid-state pinball machines, demonstrating Allied Leisure’s willingness to explore new electronic technologies despite limited resources.

Throughout the mid- to late 1970s, Allied Leisure produced a series of cocktail-style pinball tables, such as Take Five (1978), which featured compact playfields designed for bar or casual play settings. Although the company’s innovative approaches to both upright and cocktail pinball attracted enthusiasts, repeated manufacturing and reliability issues challenged its long-term viability. By the end of the decade, Allied Leisure faced mounting financial difficulties, and its pinball division struggled to compete against larger established manufacturers. In 1979, new ownership undertook a major restructuring, ultimately ceasing pinball production and rebranding the firm as Centuri to focus on the booming video arcade market. While Allied Leisure’s foray into pinball was relatively brief, its experiments with shaker cabinets, early solid-state architecture, and unconventional form factors left a distinctive mark on the evolution of 1970s pinball.
