About Brunswick Mfg. Co.

About Brunswick Mfg. Co.

Brunswick Manufacturing Company traces its origins to the J.M. Brunswick Company, founded in 1845 by John Moses Brunswick in Cincinnati, Ohio, initially catering to the billiards and bowling equipment markets. Over time, the firm expanded through partnerships with Julius Balke and the Collender Company, eventually becoming the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company. Though most famously associated with billiards, the company briefly ventured into coin-operated amusements, including early pin-type games and proto-pinball devices, leveraging its robust manufacturing infrastructure and established distribution channels.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Brunswick’s tabletop amusements were placed in bowling alleys and billiard halls, allowing customers to experience an emerging form of casual entertainment that preceded fully electromechanical pinball machines. Nevertheless, the firm’s impact on pinball production was overshadowed by its technological innovations in bowling, notably the introduction of the automatic pinsetter in 1956, which shifted resources away from the pinball segment. As specialized manufacturers such as Gottlieb, Bally, and Williams focused on advancing pinball technology, Brunswick gradually exited the field to concentrate on its more profitable business lines, including bowling, billiards, marine engines, and fitness products. Brunswick-Balke-Collender rebranded as the Brunswick Corporation, and while it continues to operate under that name, its involvement in the pinball industry remains a historical footnote.
