About Tecnoplay
Tecnoplay was an Italian pinball manufacturer established in Bologna in 1987 by former Zaccaria personnel, who sought to continue Italy’s legacy in coin-operated amusements after Zaccaria’s closure earlier in the decade. Building on their expertise, the founders incorporated innovative electronics while preserving the distinctive art and playfield layouts that defined Italian pinball. Their machines, such as “Scramble” and “X Force” released in 1987, blended fast-paced gameplay with vibrant, thematic artwork, reflecting the company’s commitment to creativity and technical refinement.
Over the course of its existence, Tecnoplay produced a modest catalog that included “Space Team” (1988), “World Cup 90” (1990), and “Captain Hook” (1992), each showcasing recognizable mechanics inspired by the team’s roots in Zaccaria design. These titles were primarily targeted at European markets, where the company maintained a loyal following, despite fierce global competition. Notable technological advancements in multi-ball modes, digitized speech, and distinctive backglass designs demonstrated the firm’s willingness to embrace new possibilities and stand apart from its larger American counterparts.
Despite its achievements, Tecnoplay ceased operations in the early 1990s as worldwide pinball popularity began to wane and industry competition intensified. The 1992 release of “Captain Hook” marked the end of the brand, but its machines remain prized by collectors for their distinct Italian styling and serve as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of Europe’s pinball scene.
